CHI is a mobile application that designed for people to monitor environmental factors in their lives. It utilises smartphone and smartwatch sensors to sense the environmental factors in users’ lives. We designed CHI to let people capture details in life, helping people live a better life.

Backgrounds

Modern lifestyles involve indoor, sedentary routines and limited outdoor activities which negatively impact people’s mental wellbeing, but people frequently remain unaware of their exposure to essential environmental factors

This lack of awareness hinders individuals from making informed decisions to improve their wellbeing.

Many existing lifestyle apps track patterns in subjective behaviours like exercising and diet. However, they often overlook critical environmental aspects which are worthwhile to be further investigated by people.

Initial Thinking

Target User
General public who wants to monitor environmental factors to live better.

Research Method
Online Survey (Google Form)
Desktop Researches
Existing Solutions Existing lifestyle apps emphasises on users subjective behaviours, rather than passive environmental factors and lack of user engagement.

What We Should Do?
A mobile app that records lifestyle patterns, providing personalised advice and journaling with photo and text features to improve wellbeing and engage with the app daily.

Research Insights

“I want to improve life quality, but I don’t know what I should monitor and alternate.”

“I gathered much data through devices, but I do not know how to interpret the data.”

“I want to actively track my lifestyle but sometimes I forgot to check them.”

Approaching the Problem :
Tracking & Engaging & Interpreting

Problem Statement

How might we help users consistently track environmental factors to generate insights and provide advice for improving their life quality?
👉
📡 Track Meaningful Environmental Data

Using smart devices’ sensors and wearable to record environmental metrics and visualise them.

🦾 Engage Users Continuously

Let users track lifestyle patterns in a persistent manner with journaling and notification.

💡 Transcribe Data to Insights

Interpret data’s meaning and how could users improve upon state quo.

Wire-framing

Through wire-framing, the intention was to

  • Craft an interactive map tool that knows where you are, allows free exploration.
  • Provide concise information in quick, easy steps.
  • Let hardworking micro-elements provide rich information.

Visual Language

The visual language combines functionality with energetic, calming tones to make users relaxed and energetic.

The visual language system combined with the system of category colours and micro-elements scales across not just the application, but communication media and marketing as well.
Crafting an identity that is clear, functional yet bespoke for Chi to make users feel calm and energetic.

Design Highlights

01 Dashboard:  Clear Marks

02 Journey: Engage Users via Logging

Design Goals:  Keep Users Using through Journaling

Calendar showcases past days with journals. Users can swipe between months to view past stories. Dot was generated based on the typical colour of the image. Users can explore the journal through tapping the dot.

03 Insights: Informative Portal

Design Goals: Insights All in One Page

Insights page emphasises on 7 days average score, showing a trend to users and giving suggestions to improve.

Dashboard showing 7 day average score and giving suggestions to improve.

Emoji provides a vibrant overview, making users feel connected with the App.

Lifestyle factor tile shows the variation in the past 7 days with graph clearly.

    04 Status Detail

Design Goals: Rich Information for Users to Think

Segment Control bar helps users select different views on time ranges when viewing data.

Different graphs are used to represent different types of data.

Actionable insights are given to users based on analysis of their individual lifestyle factor status.

Reflection

More User Researches before Design

Currently, CHI relies on users wearing smart wearables, which may not encompass all potential users. With more time, I could expand the sample size to include a more diverse user base, enabling a deeper understanding who our clients are and their preferences. This would allow me to refine the UI design to better cater to their needs and tastes.

Smart Notification

iOS supports location based notification and time sensitive notification, which is useful to remind users of spending time in green space when they are wondering around. Such feature is worth to be investigated and if more time was given, I could design a better notification system to remind users of achieving daily goals.
